On the 2 of August at Hellion Gallery in Portland, Swedish artist Naomi Nowak will unveil her latest collection of illustrated watercolours in a solo exhibition aptly titled Veil.
“My obsessions lately have been with fabric and anti-fashion (i sell shirts made exclusively from other, old shirts) and the iconic image of a veiled woman, be it a ghost, a madonna or some girl on a reality tv big brother type show who walks around in a bed sheet all day” - Naomi Nowak
Naomi lives an idyllic life in the Swedish countryside with her black cat and what I imagine to be a parade of nature spirits and muses that cross the boundaries between the fairy world and our own, to emerge from the tips of her pencils and brushes.
Her work express an intuitive feminine connectivity to nature, with imagery revealing the mysteries and truths of her personal mythology and folklore. She shows us the beauty and potency of otherworldly girl power with sensual characters that enchant you into their kingdom. Her imagery lingers in ones depths like the remnants of a dream, a whisper caught on the wind, alluring, attainable, yet beyond reach of idle hands and hearts, like a veil waiting and wanting to be drawn.
Naomi’s art prints and anti-fashion are available for purchase here.
